The Cat’s Bet – A New Cartoon

Neither one seems at all surprised.

Neither one seems at all surprised.

I’ve got a new cartoon for you. This one features cats, which is new for me. Even though I own two of them – my God the little bastards will kill me if they read this post – I never created a cat cartoon. I guess the reason behind this lies in my fear of being labeled a “cat man,” or a “cat guy.” (Image after jump.)

Anyway, my fiancée and I are the “owners” of two giant, fat and furry beasts. It would be much more accurate to say that we make up their staff. Sometimes, actually, I should say most times, I think they couldn’t give a rat’s ass about either one of us. As long as their food dish is filled with crunchy pellets, their water bowl has clean water in it, and their litter box is cleared of organic land mines, they are content and probably wouldn’t notice if we were replaced by other humans who performed the same tasks.

I think cats, and dogs to a somewhat lesser extent (I know that’s a potentially incendiary comment), posses knowledge of the human species that we will never obtain. That’s what drove me to create this rather dark cartoon. I hope that you enjoy it.

(By the way, our cats are very affectionate – they just don’t feel that it’s necessary to show it all the time, or even most of the time. After all, they’ve got things to do and places to go.)

  1. Well, this one’s better than that dreadful Craigslist cartoon. But, you still come across as a bit too angry. (I like your work, I’m just trying to be helpful.)

  2. 1. They’re not little fat bastards. They’re gigantic fat bastards.
    2. Fat Man is traumatized every time you walk out the door, and he waits at the top of the stairs when you come in most of the time so I don’t know what you’re talking about. PonyBoy, well, who knows what goes on in PonyBoy’s scary mind. It’s a dark and shadowy place in there. But even so – he only allows scritches from us, and no one else.
    3. I suggest Family Therapy.

  3. Good one, Mr. Cartoon Man—you’ve captured the very essence of the feline psyche! Expect a tidal wave of hungry requests for more cats, more cats, more cats (well, at least from me)!

    My humble caption offering:

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It’s not the meek that shall inherit the earth, it’s Mr. Mittens!”

  4. Well, where do I start?
Libby: I know you’re trying to be helpful – but please chill out (I worry about you).
My fiancee: You are correct, Fat Man is obsessed with me, and I with him (almost as much as I am with you – good catch, huh? – D’oh) And Pony Boy is a very good, yet highly disturbed little critter.
Sheila: Thank you. Your feedback and suggestions were the inspiration for this cartoon. There will be many more to come.

  6. Hey, G.S.—I wouldn’t worry about being labeled a “cat guy”; Gary Larson (of “The Far Side” fame) very often used cats as the focus of his cartoons and he was quite successful. This being said: more cats, more cats, more cats!

  8. Mr. Marbles: You don’t have to worry about me. I have a sense of humor – I come to your site don’t I? You’re pretty funny; I just think you get carried away sometimes.

  12. Ya see, G.S.–the overwhelming nationwide demand for more cats has already begun!

  13. You are quite correct, Sheila. And, I owe it all to your request to see cat cartoons.

  19. I really like your work, but I had to look at this one for a time before it got it. I’m sure it’s me, but at first I thought I was looking at giant trees – but having said that, your “cat-ion” is very good.
