Last night’s salon was a smashing success, and yes, I say so in large part because I was the organizer.

We took full advantage of the gazebo situated at the center of Van Vorst Park in downtown Jersey City - it was a great way to spend a summer night.

Everyone sat quite comfortably in camping chairs as we discussed topics including:

  1. The construction of transgender toilets in Thailand. As in, specifically for transgender people. (This is not a misprint or an attempt to see if you’re paying attention.)
  2. Can people be forced to take medication against their will?
  3. Luck - what exactly is it, and how do you recognize it? (Check out Sean O’Malley’s site “Luck: A User’s Manual” listed on the links.)
  4. Going green - a fad, or here to stay?
  5. New music and pop culture. (Bands recommended: Santogold, MGMT, The Felice Brothers, The Hold Steady, Citizen Cope, Death Cab for Cutie and Peter Bjorn And John
  6. 9/11- is it way past time that we move on?
  7. Who will control information on the web?

The crowd was large and the discussion brisk. We even had two special guests representing “NJ for Obama”, one of whom stayed on to answer questions- and this with no safety nets or fancy editing to shield him. I must say, he did a fine job, and I think that he learned a lot about what voters really want out of a candidate (more listening and fewer percentage-laced answers and less attacks on fellow candidates). We will be approaching Clinton and Giuliani’s people next to see if they are brave enough to weather salon exposure. Stay tuned- the next one will be standing room only!

humble cave last night, went very well . This is not just
my over-inflated ego speaking, I received some extremely
positive feedback as a I mellowed and mingled- cocktail in
hand- after my stellar performance as dictator, oops, I
mean moderator.

The group discussion covered many of today’s most
pressing questions and issues:
1. Do we have too many rights restrictions on teenagers?
2. Can we separate religion and politics in the future?
3. Is America ready for an African American, or a female
president?
4. The reduction in funding for women’s health by the FDA;
who is behind it, and what motivates them?
5. Is truth, as in the need for facts to establish positions and
construct arguments, relevant anymore?
6. Has the insurance industry become institutionalized in
America and around the world?
7. Will enormous piles of money conquer the deep,
murderous personal animosities between Sting, Copeland
and Summers, and allow baby-boomers and their spoiled
children to enjoy a senseless reunion tour?
8. Who are your heroes and why?
9. What do you cherish the most?
AND…
10. Will the host/moderator make it through the night without
someone taking a swing at him?

and they may prove to be valuable in the continuing quest for
knowledge. They are listed below:
